Student Spotlights

Student Spotlights share the voices of young cellists as they reflect on their journey with the instrument. These short conversations explore beginnings, challenges, practice, performance, and the quiet ways music shapes how students think, feel, and grow. The focus is not on outcomes, but on process: the effort, patience, and persistence that unfold over time. Together, these stories offer an honest picture of what it means to learn the cello, one day at a time.

Holmes Hinkle

Holmes has wanted to play the cello since kindergarten and waited two full years before he could begin. His mom expected the interest to fade. It didn't. Now in fifth grade, he balances cello with lacrosse, draws inspiration from Mozart, and has already started composing his own music. His advice to beginners is worth reading on its own. Adriana Walker

Adriana began cello out of curiosity and friendship, and over time learned to work through early challenges with focus and motivation. As the music grew more demanding, cello shifted from an assignment to something genuinely enjoyable, giving her a sense of ownership over her practice and sound. Today, she sees the cello as a gift that rewards patience and builds confidence. Click below to read Adriana’s full reflection.
